Help homebound seniors! Apply to be a volunteer with this special project. We will need volunteers to facilitate classes, coordinate appointments, install the VSC devices, and manage the overall development of this project as we progress.
What is it?
GEDCO’s Virtual Senior Center initiative places large, twenty-two inch, all-in-one touchscreen devices with webcams into the homes of socially-isolated older adults. Through the device, seniors who are stuck in their homes will have new opportunities to continue having engaging and meaningful lives. Interactive discussions, chair exercise classes, book clubs, and bible study, are just a few of the activities to which participants would have access. Get all of the details here.
For over two years, Selfhelp Community Services in New York piloted this program and learned many valuable lessons. GEDCO has now received limited funding to develop a 6 month pilot program in north Baltimore, providing internet service and programming for 50 participants.
How Does It Work?
The Virtual Senior Center device includes an extremely easy-to-use, senior-focused interface that participants can easily navigate with their fingers (no keyboard or mouse required). The computer comes at no cost to participants. A volunteer (who has passed through a screening and background check process) installs the device in the home of the participant and then walks the participant through the simple “how to” steps. Since the device truly is so easy to use, participants will immediately have access to the Virtual Senior Center once the device is installed!
How Can I Participate?
You can participate in one or more ways.
First, we are looking to recruit 50 participants who reside in northeastern Baltimore city to become participants in the Virtual Senior Center. The recruitment process will involve two interviews. Make a participant referral by clicking here.
We are additionally seeking interested individuals to serve as Virtual Senior Center Facilitators. Activity Providers give an hour or more of their time each week or month to provide live classes-all from the comfort of your own home! If you have a special talent, skill, or hobby that you would enjoy sharing with others, then you may be the right fit for the Virtual Senior Center! Become a Facilitator today by clicking here.
Live demonstrations of the Virtual Senior Center are available by request; contact 410-243-0188. You can learn even more about GEDCO’s Virtual Senior Center by clicking here.
